The newly appointed Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Bangladesh, Dr. Laura Nicole Tomm-Bonde, paid a courtesy call on the Hon’ble State Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Shama Obaed Islam, MP, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dhaka, today.
During the meeting, the Hon’ble State Minister reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment, as a GCM Champion Country to the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. She highlighted the Government’s priority to transform Bangladesh’s migration sector towards a skills-based, rights-based and well-governed system. She also expressed Government’s strong focus on skills development, recognition of qualifications, ethical recruitment, migrant workers’ protection in the destination countries, regular labour mobility pathways and sustainable reintegration of the returnee migrants. In this regard, the Hon’ble State Minister appreciated IOM’s continued technical support, assistance and cooperation in strengthening Bangladesh’s migration governance framework and called for IOM’s enhanced support to advance Government’s migration priorities.
Dr. Tomm-Bonde appreciated Bangladesh’s leadership in migration governance and reaffirmed IOM’s commitment to further strengthening cooperation with Bangladesh prioritizing on the Government’s vision, agenda and commitments. Both sides expressed hope for further deepening the Bangladesh-IOM partnership in establishing effective migration governance in Bangladesh.
